Worshop Controller

Location: Reading
Salary: Competitive DOE
Hours: 45 per week

We are looking for an experienced and motivated Workshop Controller to lead and inspire our commercial vehicle workshop team at our Vehicle Maintenance Unit (VMU) in Reading. You will manage the flow of work through the workshop, ensuring quality, compliance, and efficiency, while guiding the team to deliver exceptional service to customers.

Key Responsibilities of a Workshop Controller

  • Ensure all workshop processes are followed for every job

  • Create job cards, pre-time jobs, and allocate work to technicians to maximise sold hours and efficiency

  • Monitor job progress and obtain authorisation for additional work when required

  • Ensure 100% sign-off on completed inspections to maintain customer Operator’s Licenses

  • Issue VOR reports accurately and within agreed timeframes

  • Identify and record all warranty items; ensure replaced parts are labelled, documented, and processed correctly

  • Audit job packs to ensure accuracy before passing to administration/invoicing

  • Monitor and manage workshop loading to maintain smooth workflow

  • Measure technician performance, ensuring a first-time fix culture with quality and compliance

  • Maintain workshop cleanliness, organisation, and compliance with company standards

  • Ensure all service processes (including quality checks and MOT preparation) and company policies are adhered to

  • Ensure compliance with statutory requirements including health & safety, vehicle legislation, trading standards, and fire regulations

  • Manage scheduling and deadlines effectively to support customer requirements

  • Provide outstanding customer service to both internal and external customers and suppliers

Skills and Behaviours for a Workshop Controller

Essential

  • Proven experience in a workshop controller or supervisory role within a commercial vehicle environment

  • Strong understanding of workshop processes, compliance, and Operator’s License responsibilities

  • Ability to lead, inspire, motivate, and manage a team of technicians

  • Excellent organisational and scheduling skills

  • Strong communication and customer service abilities

  • Focused on delivering efficiency, profitability, and compliance

  • Good IT skills with experience in workshop/maintenance management systems (R2C, Truckfile, Kerridge, etc. advantageous)
